The Fish Nerds are honored and humbled by guest host Ret Talbot, an award-winning writer and photojournalist with over two decades of experience covering stories from some of the more remote corners of the globe. Dave and Clay were thrilled to hear fascinating stories from the aquarium world from a guy who actually does deep research on the subject. The guys learn that blast fishing to collect fish for aquariums is false, but using cyanide is a real thing. This is a must-hear show for anyone interested in keeping fish in an aquarium. Ret was a good sport to help with Fish in the News, Stump the Fish Nerds, and the world famous Fish Nerds' quiz.

13413116_10153715374861608_9058631563401648528_nDave, Clay and Fish Guy Josh from FN West crashed the North American Native Fish Association annual meeting in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

May 31, 2016

Dave and Clay were invited to visit the Maine Highlands! So they went and while they were there they stayed at the beautiful and rustic Wilson's on Mooshead Lake. The Wilson's took them fishing in the Kennebec River, where they caught dozens of brook trout and monster smallmouth bass!  After fishing it was dinner at the beautiful Kelly's Landing  restaurant. While there they got to hang out with local historian Liz from the Katahdin "Kate" Museum, Moosehead's Marine Museum and famous steam ship.  The next day the weather turned bad, so they spent some time making friends and checking out the local businesses.

The Highlands

highlands

From Maine’s highest peak, Mt. Katahdin to its largest lake, Moosehead, The Maine Highlands offers great outdoor adventures, historic and cultural experiences, many culinary delights and unexpected entertainment opportunities. Located in the center of Maine, there are more than 200 waterfalls, miles and miles of trails for hiking, ATVing, and some of the best snowmobiling trails anywhere. The last or first portion (depends on your perspective) of the Applachian Trail is in The Maine Highlands. Known as the "Hundred-Mile Wilderness", it is said there are more moose seen there than on any other part of the trail. If you are looking for less moose and more music, head to one of our many festivals, the Waterfront Concerts series in Bangor, enjoy shopping boutique or mall style, or try some of our culinary delights and craft beers. Whatever your adventure, The Maine Highlands is a must visit while exploring Maine.

113image-06If you think your lot in life is less than stellar, consider the features in this episode: men charged with scooping up 35 tones of dead fish in under the hot Chinese sun, a pupfish killed by a naked drunk redneck on a binge, and a sea cucumber with an unwanted fish living in its butt that is eating it's gonads. Yep, your life could be worse. All this and a new FN challenge from our friends at FN West. This episode is one for the greatest hits album.

MulletThis episode jumps around more than a silver carp next to an Evinrude. Doc Martin talks about bowfin, the prehistoric air-breathing freshwater fish that turns out to be a fabulous sport fish. Fish in the News features the use of herpes to control invasive common carp in Australia, how a dead guy catches a massive carp and a fundraiser in the south that charges people to toss mullets from Florida into Alabama.  Dave shares why he will never drink another Moosehead beer again and Clay shares his first story of learning to be a guide in New Hampshire at the New Hampshire Outdoor Learning Center. Hold on, cause this roller coaster of an episode may make you queasy.

110-striper-joshFN West takes us on a specimen collection trip on Suisun Marsh with the UC Davis fisheries crew. The trip was made extra special when fish nerd celebrity Dr. Peter Moyle joined the crew. Dr. Moyle is Distinguished Professor Emeritus and associate director of the Center for Watershed Sciences at UC Davis. He literally wrote the book on California fishes (Inland Fishes of California). He also wrote Dave's college ichthyology text book 25 years ago! Dave and Clay wrap up the show with "Fish in the News" that features less toxic fish, pucker gloves and an endangered New England river.
