Chris Proulx from www.borealisproductions.com recently made a documentary on the Brook Trout Restoration project on Tunnel Brook Road in New Hampshire. Chris and I (Clay) went to check out the progress by having a very scientific fishing adventure. In this special episode we take you along with us to hear for yourself if the Tunnel Brook Road Brook Trout experiment has worked.
In this action packed episode Luke Chamings from Chamo's Lures sits in as co-host. We have a great time talking about fishing and lure making in Australia. We then move on to some serious news where we hear about a sick Aussie Goldfish and the lengths a little girl would go to save her poor poor fish. Finally we have an important discussion on fishing with corn
In this very special episode we say goodbye to Host Dave Kellam, he has decided to move on to other projects, we of course will check in with him on occasion. In addition our friends the FN West check in with a visit from Peru. Fish in the News is very exciting and we even play Stump the Fish Nerds. We are glad to be back!
The Fish Nerds are honored and humbled by guest host Ret Talbot, an award-winning writer and photojournalist with over two decades of experience covering stories from some of the more remote corners of the globe. Dave and Clay were thrilled to hear fascinating stories from the aquarium world from a guy who actually does deep research on the subject. The guys learn that blast fishing to collect fish for aquariums is false, but using cyanide is a real thing. This is a must-hear show for anyone interested in keeping fish in an aquarium. Ret was a good sport to help with Fish in the News, Stump the Fish Nerds, and the world famous Fish Nerds' quiz.

Dave, Clay and Fish Guy Josh from FN West crashed the North American Native Fish Association annual meeting in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Dave and Clay were invited to visit the Maine Highlands! So they went and while they were there they stayed at the beautiful and rustic Wilson's on Mooshead Lake. The Wilson's took them fishing in the Kennebec River, where they caught dozens of brook trout and monster smallmouth bass! After fishing it was dinner at the beautiful Kelly's Landing restaurant. While there they got to hang out with local historian Liz from the Katahdin "Kate" Museum, Moosehead's Marine Museum and famous steam ship. The next day the weather turned bad, so they spent some time making friends and checking out the local businesses.
From Maine’s highest peak, Mt. Katahdin to its largest lake, Moosehead, The Maine Highlands offers great outdoor adventures, historic and cultural experiences, many culinary delights and unexpected entertainment opportunities. Located in the center of Maine, there are more than 200 waterfalls, miles and miles of trails for hiking, ATVing, and some of the best snowmobiling trails anywhere. The last or first portion (depends on your perspective) of the Applachian Trail is in The Maine Highlands. Known as the "Hundred-Mile Wilderness", it is said there are more moose seen there than on any other part of the trail. If you are looking for less moose and more music, head to one of our many festivals, the Waterfront Concerts series in Bangor, enjoy shopping boutique or mall style, or try some of our culinary delights and craft beers. Whatever your adventure, The Maine Highlands is a must visit while exploring Maine.

If you think your lot in life is less than stellar, consider the features in this episode: men charged with scooping up 35 tones of dead fish in under the hot Chinese sun, a pupfish killed by a naked drunk redneck on a binge, and a sea cucumber with an unwanted fish living in its butt that is eating it's gonads. Yep, your life could be worse. All this and a new FN challenge from our friends at FN West. This episode is one for the greatest hits album.
This episode jumps around more than a silver carp next to an Evinrude. Doc Martin talks about bowfin, the prehistoric air-breathing freshwater fish that turns out to be a fabulous sport fish. Fish in the News features the use of herpes to control invasive common carp in Australia, how a dead guy catches a massive carp and a fundraiser in the south that charges people to toss mullets from Florida into Alabama. Dave shares why he will never drink another Moosehead beer again and Clay shares his first story of learning to be a guide in New Hampshire at the New Hampshire Outdoor Learning Center. Hold on, cause this roller coaster of an episode may make you queasy.

Dave from the Fish Nerds chats with Jesse Prunier and Jess Cole, who are making their fishy dreams come true at the Sumner Brook Fish Farm in Ossipee, NH.
In addition to selling trout for stocking, they have a pay-to-fish pond and they sell herbs and smoked trout. Jess runs the other family business, Sumner Brook Herbals.
The fish farming couple wear their hearts on their sleeves (and on the bumper of their Volvo station wagon)
It seems everything on the farm is fishy.

FN West takes us on a specimen collection trip on Suisun Marsh with the UC Davis fisheries crew. The trip was made extra special when fish nerd celebrity Dr. Peter Moyle joined the crew. Dr. Moyle is Distinguished Professor Emeritus and associate director of the Center for Watershed Sciences at UC Davis. He literally wrote the book on California fishes (Inland Fishes of California). He also wrote Dave's college ichthyology text book 25 years ago! Dave and Clay wrap up the show with "Fish in the News" that features less toxic fish, pucker gloves and an endangered New England river.

Marcus Hunt, costumed actor, TV host, and inventor, talks to the Nerds about his latest venture. He is launching The World’s First “Fish-Ready” Sportfishing Belt Buckle! Through a Kickstarter campaign, Marcus will bring to the planet a sleek, rugged and customizable belt and buckle combo. Fashionable and functional. Not only does he know his belt buckles, but he also talked about his previous career as the Michelin Man. The show then features a segment from FN West when The Amazing James goes to a flyfishing show and gets the lowdown on this popular sport. "Fish in the News" covers the world's first fish with braces (sort of) and the bloody details of the birth of a baby false killer whale. Thar she blows!

Dave and Clay welcome to the show FN West! A fishy duo comprised of FN correspondents The Amazing James and Fish Guy Josh. These two brothers from different mothers hale from the Oakland/ San Francisco area and excel at finding the fishiest, nerdiest stuff west of the continental divide. In addition to catching up with the Nerds and accepting the a FN challenge, they submitted an outstanding report from Hawaii's famous Honolulu Fish Auction. The show also features Doc Martin following up on a fan request to investigate the strange black scabbardfish. "Fish in the News" completes the show and includes a report on the deceitful knifefish.

The Nerds caught up with Kristen Berube who just wrote a book called "Confessions of a Camo Queen: Living with an Outdoorsman". She has a great time talking about her crazy life as an outdoorswoman with a husband, three children, six dogs and a pig in Missoula, Montana. A denturist by trade and a graduate of Montana State University and the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, she get's in the spirit of the podcast by telling funny stories and doing a spot-on impersonation of English royalty. This show also includes one of our best "Fish in the News" segments and a report on the Sunapee trout by fellow Fish Nerd Doc Martin.

Fishing Podcast Episode #104 -Dave and Clay get fancy and go to Boston's Symphony Hall to interview international singing star and expert Louisiana fisherman Paul Groves. The interview was set up by Sam, the Hall's senior publicist and our new best friend in Boston. We hauled all our recording gear to Paul's fancy dressing room and learned about his journey from a kid putting around Louisiana in a jon boat to a guy jetting around the globe singing in the best opera houses! Of course we gave Paul one of our famous Fish Nerd quizzes that tested his knowledge of fish and musical instruments (he knew more fish). We can't thank Paul and Sam enough for making this one of a kind show possible.
